Yellowstone River Report 12/23/2020 Date: 12/23/2020 The Yellowstone River is a bit slushy this morning but might clear up a bit over the next few days with highs back up into the 40's. This 50 mile valley is flanked by the high peaked Gallatin and Absorka mountain ranges on either side, and the river itself is the classic run-riffle-pool stuff everyone loves. Before the late warming of the river there were big stone fly nymphs of Pteronarcys and Acroneuria (now Calineuria) here, and at the foot of the faster stretches, in deeper water, an occasional large trout could be found waiting for the drifting nymph. From here down to Mallard's Rest there is a pleasant mix of big pools and large browns and rainbows. There are several good spots to gain access if you enjoy walking and wading. The Yellowstone is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states, and there is excellent trout water from its tributaries high inside Yellowstone Park, downstream through Gardiner, the Paradise Valley, Livingston, and on to well below Big Timber; a stretch of nearly two hundred river miles!
